I am at present in Bogor, Indonesia working as an English teacher but would like to return to Mexico where I lived for 20 years previously. Work Experience
English Language Arts Teacher
Bogor - Sekolah Bogor Raya
I currently work here
I would like to be considered for a classroom teacher or semi- administrative position. I enjoy working with all children within the age range of 6 to11yrs and can also teach English to adults. At present I am working as an English Language Arts teacher to Grades 1 and 2 in Sekolah Bogor Raya. This school prides itself on its use of ICT in the classroom and this has been an exciting and interesting challenge for me. It is also fully incorporated in the PYP and I work in cooperation with the class teachers and specialist teachers to plan the units of learning.
Year 6 Primary School Teacher
Jakarta, Indonesia - New Zealand International School, Jakarta
from 2007.07 to 2010.06
I worked with 6th Grade students at The New Zealand International School for 3 years and taught all subjects of the curriculum with the exception of music and I.T. I also taught physical education to Yrs. 1, 2 and 6 on a weekly basis and followed The New Zealand Curriculum in all areas. I gave afternoon activities including Drama, Art, Chess, Photography and Math and took the students on 3 Outdoor Education trips of 3 days duration to mountain areas near to Jakarta.
English Teacher Grade 1
Jakarta, Indonesia - Sekolah Santa Laurensia
from 2006.06 to 2007.07
In Santa Laurensia School I gained some very valuable experience teaching Language Arts to 1st grade students using the CALLA curriculum and prior to that I taught English to students of all ages (including teenagers and adults) in a language school in Medan. I have found it very interesting and useful in recent years to have gained more experience in ESL teaching because even in international schools one finds a large number of ESL students and I feel totally prepared for this now.
English Conversation Class Teacher Yrs 4-6
Cuernavaca, Mexico - Colegio Williams de Cuernavaca
from 2002.07 to 2003.07
I lived in Mexico for 21 years working in bilingual schools, language schools and one international school. I had experience using some of the American schemes for the teaching of English at elementary level. I also enjoyed teaching English as a Foreign Language to adults in some of the language schools in Cuernavaca. During my long period at Greengates School, Mexico City I worked as a general subjects teacher for 17 years (following the National Curriculum from when it was introduced) with students in Yrs. 2 to 4. For a number of years I was responsible for visual aids and resources and had a lot of experience taking the students on field trips to many different parts of Mexico.
Education
Certificate in Education - Math, Chemistry and Education plus Supporting Studies
University of Keele Institute of Education - Keele, UK
from 1972 to 1975
I studied for 3 years full time at the University of Keele Institute of Education. My qualification is Certificate in Education awarded in October, 1975.
Additional Information
Teaching approach// My approach to the learning situation is child-centered with an emphasis on hands-on experience and discovery methods. I see my role more as a facilitator and guide, helping students to become enthusiastic inquirers who will eventually become internationally-minded young people who have an awareness of caring for their planet. I like my students to use I.T. when available to aid them in their research. I prefer having the students in mixed ability groups. I particularly enjoy the teaching of math and science in the primary school and I am always careful to build on the student’s prior knowledge, gradually taking them to higher levels of understanding through fun activities. I believe I am very strong in the teaching of English and have extensive experience teaching reading using the many different reading schemes and in the application and uses of reading tests. I have used the writing process and have guided students to recognize and learn about the many different types of texts including explanatory writing, exposition writing and information reports etc. I like to give the students the opportunity to present their work to the class and to parents, encouraging them to use technology (like MS Powerpoint for example) to enhance their work. I have used role plays, drama activities and songs to make the English class as interesting as possible and similar activities can be used for the humanities. I am used to preparing and organizing the work using and teaching appropriate learning strategies, taking into account mixed abilities and creating varied activities to cater for multiple intelligences. Apart from lesson preparation, I like to evaluate my classes afterwards to consider if any changes or adaptations need to be made. I have used different methods of assessment including rubrics for student evaluation in CALLA, the NATIONAL CURRICULUM and the PYP.
